For patients
Stem cells
Adipose cells, bone marrow cells and Dezawa Muse cells are three different things that often share one name.

Adipose and bone marrow
Adipose means fat tissue. Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside bones. Some clinics collect cells from a patient's own fat or bone marrow and use them in the same procedure.
Dezawa Muse cells
Muse cells, short for multilineage-differentiating stress enduring cells, were first described in 2010 by Dr. Mari Dezawa's research team in Japan. They are identified by a surface marker called SSEA-3.
Dezawa MuseCells® come from MuseCell Innovations. Encompass Biologics distributes them to licensed physicians, not to patients.
What the FDA has approved
Only a small number of stem cell products are FDA-approved, for specific blood and transplant-related conditions. Dezawa MuseCells® are not among them.
Whether a clinic may inject live Muse cells depends on state law, and only a few states allow it today. The doctor search shows those states and the date the list was last updated.
Questions to ask your doctor
Bring these to the appointment. A good practice will answer them plainly.
- Which cells are you recommending, and where do they come from?
- Is this product FDA-approved? If not, what allows its use in this state?
- How is the product stored, shipped and verified before it is used?
